What causes compressor clutch to engage?

My 84 f150 compressor clutch is engaged at all times. Even when I turn the ac off. If I can figure out what sends the power to the clutch, I can back-track and disconnect/fix it. Can you tell me where the power wire starts from and the route it takes to the compressor clutch? Its on an 84 f150.

How much is a compressor for my homes air conditioner?

I was told my a/c unit needs a new compressor. How much are they? I have a 3 ton unit.
